Dr. Mehmet Toner, PhD is the Helen Andrus Benedict Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He co-founded the Center for Engineering in Medicine & Surgery at MGH and serves as Director of the NIH BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems (BioMEMS) Resource Center, advancing microsystems and engineering solutions for clinical medicine.


Dr. Toner is internationally recognized for pioneering work at the interface of engineering and the life sciences. His research spans cryopreservation, microfluidics, tissue engineering, rare-cell isolation and diagnostics, regenerative medicine, and global health. This body of work has generated foundational platforms that are reshaping clinical practice and enabling new paradigms in translational and regenerative medicine. A member of multiple national academies including the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, and National Academy of Inventors, he has published extensively and serves on editorial boards and scientific advisory panels worldwide.


Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering, Istanbul Technical University; MS in Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and PhD in Medical Engineering, Harvard–MIT Health Sciences and Technology.
